Kailua

Kailua is located 12 miles northeast of Honolulu, occupying about 10 square miles on the eastern coast of Oahu, with a population of 38,000. Take the Pali Highway from Honolulu to its end and you will find yourself in this laid-back, tight-knit, compact town with quaint shops and fabulous restaurants offering all ethnic food choices imaginable.. It is known for its comfortable temperatures, cooling trade winds, award-winning beaches, and lush greenery everywhere. The towns of Kaneohe and Waimanalo are its neighbors. The history of Kailua is surrounded by folklore and legend. However, history buffs believe that the first inhabitants lived and worked the Kawainui Marsh and surrounding land some 1,500 years earlier. Real estate in Kailua was once home to King Kakuhihewa and other Ali’i who were attracted to the agricultural possibilities and beauty of the area. The oral-written lore and legend surrounding Kailua homes can be explored year-round within the archives of the Hawaii State Library system. Kailua means “two seas” because of the two lagoons in the area. Everyone finds things they love to do in Kailua! There are three miles of public beaches with access paths where you can walk long distances or watch the sunrise. Choose to swim, build sand castles, kayak, surf, Spearfish, dive, bike, hike, kitesurf, windsurf, stand-up paddle, boating, snorkeling, bird-watch, walk or even bowl. There are six golf courses and gorgeous hikes to the Lanikai “Pillbox” or even mount Olomana for the experts! Residents and visitors alike love Kailua Beach Park, Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands (“The Mokes”), Ulupo Heiau, and Maunawili Valley and Falls. Marine Corps Base Hawaii is well known and sits on 2900 acres. Kailua is also home to Kawai Nui Marsh – 800 acres of the largest wetlands in Hawaii. There is even a marsh walk area that is amazingly beautiful and peaceful. Kailua is known for its weekly farmers’ markets, its “I Love Kailua” town parties, and its Independence Day Parade and fireworks. Shopping is also an “event” in Kailua!
